It's a lot blurrier than usual...

Does anyone else feel like once August ends the rest of the year is a blur?

One minute it's Labor Day, the next it's Christmas.

Only to me, this entire year has been a blur. People say this all the time, but this year feels blurrier than normal.

I read somewhere that the best way to slow down time is to be present in as many moments as possible.

It makes sense if you think about it right? The more memories you can recall in a certain period of time, the 'longer' that time period seems to have lasted.

In one of my favorite years I can recall, we went on four vacations, built a bungalow by the pool in our backyard, my sister got married, we saw a shuttle launch up close, my daughter went to dance camp, we spent long summer nights by the pool, we sanded and painted our kitchen cabinets...it was the year that lasted forever.

Fast forward to this year. We've taken one short weekend trip, my daughter was in one week-long tech camp (which was actually really cool), I've been in the pool maybe five times and the rest is a blur.

That's about it.

I've spent the last 8 months hustling so hard, I've missed out on making more moments that matter.

In my case, since I went back to working for myself, I felt that it was a great time to learn new skills, embody new mindsets, ingrain better habits and do all the things I never did because "I had a full time job."

I vowed to:

✔️ Walk 2 miles 5x a week
✔️ Learn Spanish
✔️ Learn French
✔️ Send bi-weekly inspiration to my email list
✔️ Grow my email list to 5,000
✔️ Create a digital course
✔️ Read three books a month (one business development, one personal development, one guilty pleasure)
✔️ Complete the master courses that I've signed up for
✔️ Take my grandmother to a new 'country' every week with food and decorations
✔️ Learn a new song on guitar every month

and oh, meditate daily.

The next thing I know, it's almost Labor Day and I don't recall a whole lot of fun or relaxation.

I think a lot of us experience this feeling of being off balance now and again. I go through cycles.

You get to a point where you have so many balls in the air you can't possibly slow down to figure out which ones to let drop.

The good news is I have a system for this that naturally starts with being curious.

I ask myself:

🤔 Why have I set each goal?

🤔 What exactly do I want to accomplish?

🤔 Which commitments are non-negotiable?

🤔 Which commitments can be scaled back?

🤔 Which commitments can be gently let go?

This is an extremely liberating exercise that I highly recommend.

Do I really need a master course in making sourdough bread? I don't even like sourdough bread.

French sucks. I sound like a strangled duck. Why force this?

Do I need to 'read' or can I listen to some of the books? Can I do it while I walk?

And so on.

Next, I convert as many non-negotiable commitments into Atomic Habits as possible.

If you haven't read the book, I recommend it.

It's the idea that if you put at least a 1% effort toward a goal every day, you will be 100% closer to it in a year than if you'd done nothing at all.

If I walk for 30 minutes a day and listen to a book, that's 7 miles a week and 1/4 of a book. That's a lot more than not walking or reading at all right?

If I practice Spanish for 5 minutes a day, every day, for 365 days, I most certainly will know more than if I hadn't practiced it at all. Thanks Duolingo.

If I take my grandma to a new "country" once a month, that's better than having to reschedule every other week.

If I meditate for 3 minutes a day, every day, for 365 days, I will be more clear-headed than if I hadn't attempted to slow my thoughts at all.

Last, I revived an old commitment. NO working on the weekends. That's family time.

Until next time,

Katrina "NO weekend work" Turner

Hey you, I know I went dark for a minute. Not because I ghosted you on purpose, but because I’ve been in the lab. Quietly rebuilding my content, systems, and offers from the ground up. Deleting what no longer fits. Reworking what deserves another shot. Getting ruthlessly clear about what’s next — and who it’s for. Here’s the thing: Sometimes you gotta go dark if you wanna see the light. If I’m going to show up in your inbox, it’s not going to be with filler. You’ll never get content for...

A friend of mine was laid off in mid-2023, battled job hunting for months, and after five interviews AND a PowerPoint presentation, finally landed a solid job in March of 2024. A few weeks ago, she was laid off—again. I noticed that there are lots of LinkedIn posts about what to do when you get laid off, but I've yet to find any of them helpful. "Update your resume." Thanks, Captain Obvious. I know this drill. Better than most. I worked for two companies that went out of business, got fired...

This is kind of nuts, but somehow I keep getting new subscribers and I just wanted to take a minute to say HEY, I see you! And thanks for subscribing. Today I want to talk about knowing the difference between what you want and what you think you want. I've made a shit ton of mistakes in my career, but I've also racked up a lot of wins. You can't have one without the other, and the absolute best way to approach any challenge - be it in life or work - is with intentional curiosity. Always ask...
